Pangkor Island ( Pulau Pangkor ) – Batu Bersurat / Sacred Rock
The Dutch Inscription Stone of Pangkor Island
Batu Bersurat, also known as the Sacred Rock or Tiger Rock, is a large inscribed boulder located in Kampung Teluk Gedung on Pangkor Island (Pulau Pangkor). The inscriptions on the rock are believed to have been carved by Dutch soldiers stationed at the nearby Dutch Fort between 1743 and 1748. The year “1743” appears on the rock five times, signifying its historical significance.
Recognized as a historical monument, the Sacred Rock is now sheltered by a modern roof to protect it from weathering.

In English, the rock is referred to as the Sacred Rock, Inscribed Rock, or Tiger Rock, the latter name stemming from a widely held belief that the primary engraving depicts a tiger mauling a boy. This has led to various theories and legends, including one suggesting that the image represents a tiger killing the son of a senior Dutch official stationed at the Dutch Fort.
However, some researchers dispute these apocryphal stories, arguing that the image does not depict a tiger but rather the Dutch coat of arms used at the time. They note that while the carving may not be highly detailed, the animal in question is a lion—distinguished by its tufted tail—and it carries a quiver of arrows and a sword, not a young boy. Even the outline surrounding the carving closely resembles the red shield on the Dutch coat of arms.
To the right of the lion engraving, the symbol “VOC” is clearly visible, representing the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie). The letter “A” is believed to signify the Amsterdam Chamber of the company. Additionally, other inscriptions such as IK, R.O., BVH, PVL, VM, PP, and MA. are believed to represent the initials of those who carved the stone. The engraving is thought to have been completed in 1743, as this date is inscribed on the rock.
Adding to its intrigue, Batu Bersurat is surrounded by local folklore. Some villagers claim that the rock is gradually growing in size, while certain visitors believe it is imbued with earth energy, which can be felt by touching it with both hands.
